More Possible Consumer Damages and Legal Claims as GM Recall for Defective Ignition Switches Grows to 2.6 Million Vehicles

The General Motors recall for faulty ignition switches, originally ordered in February 2014, has now grown to 2.6 million vehicles. The product defect has been linked to numerous crashes and 13 deaths.

Media outlets have reported that GM first knew of design problem in its vehicles in 2001 but only recently issued the recall. Those who purchased one of the GM recalled vehicles may have legal claims against the company, whether or not they suffered injuries in an accident.

New Models Added to GM Recall

The GM cars included in this latest recall are the Chevrolet Cobalt 2008, 2009 and 2010 model years; the Pontiac Solstice model years 2008, 2009 and 2010; the Chevrolet HHR model years 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011; the Saturn Sky model years 2008, 2009, and 2010, the Opel GT model year 2007, and the Pontiac Pursuit model years 2005 and 2006.

The GM vehicles recalled due to the faulty ignition switch now include:

  • Chevrolet Cobalt - 2005-10 model years
  • Pontiac G5 - 2005-10
  • Saturn Ion - 2003-07
  • Chevrolet HHR - 2006-11
  • Pontiac Solstice - 200610
  • Saturn Sky - 2007 - 2010
  • Opel GT - 2007
  • Pontiac Pursuit - 2005-2006

The faulty ignition switch can cause the vehicle to shut down unexpectedly, leading to problems with the vehicles' airbags and power steering while driving.

GM Culture of Cover Up

GM is the subject now of Congressional investigations, among others. After reviewing documents and hearing recent Congressional testimony, Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill, chair of the subcommittee on consumer protection, commented about GM's "culture of cover up."

Attorneys of the St. Louis law firm of Gray Ritter Graham are investigating potential legal claims of those consumers who purchased one of the recalled GM cars. The firm is also investigating claims for diminished value by those who have not yet suffered an accident.

If you purchased and currently own any of the GM recalled vehicles and believe you may have a claim, please contact us. You may have a claim for legal action even if you have not yet had an accident.
