Commercial truck drivers are prone to sleep apnea.  Sleep apnea can lead to dangerously fatigued truck drivers and be catastrophic for others on the road.

Obstructive sleep apnea forces the throat muscles to relax periodically through the night, temporarily blocking a person’s airway. This can stop a person’s breathing for a slight moment and interrupt sleep.

These interruptions can occur hundreds of times a night, leaving a sufferer exhausted the next day.

That’s per a recent survey conducted by Stay Metrics, a company that provides training tools to the trucking industry.  The private research (“First Impression Survey,”), made available last December, purports that 24% of big rig drivers feel their orientation training was lacking.

Some of this orientation deals with company-specific policies.  But a large portion of the inadequate truck driver training has to do with federal rules and regulations ...

As the number of people killed in commercial truck accidents continues to climb, some in the trucking industry continue to decry measures aimed at preventing fatal tractor-trailer crashes.

Safety measures have taken hold for passenger vehicles, both in terms of onboard technology features and drivers acting more cautiously.  The results are evident; U.S. fatal motor vehicle crashes have steadily fallen in recent years.

The same is not true for the nation’s commercial trucking sector.  In the last 10 years are so, deadly big rig accidents have trended upward.

Despite all of this ...

Based on the number of truck drivers who failed drug tests last year, the federal government is increasing the number of mandated drug tests for truckers this year.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced late December 2019 that it is doubling the rate of random drug tests for commercial truck driver beginning this year.  As of January 1, 2020, the minimum rate of random truck driver drug testing jumped from the previous 25% to 50%.

The decision to dramatically raise the rate of testing for truckers under the influence of illegal drugs was mandated by federal ...

A time posing a great risk for fatal drunk-driving crashes – New Year’s Eve – has passed. While the number of drunk-driving accidents that occurred that night has yet been reported, we do have new data that shows alcohol-impaired drivers remain a year-round serious threat.

Last month the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration issued a report on drunk driving for 2018, the most recent year for finalized data. “Alcohol-Impaired Driving,” paints a vivid picture on the dire consequences of this careless driving behavior.

We have become a country of phone-addicted people.  And nowhere is this more true – and more dangerous – than on our nation’s roads. Some estimates place the amount of people driving while on their cell phones as high as 80 percent.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, which is when Zendrive released its 2019 research (“Public Enemy No. 1”) on distracted driving. This is the third consecutive year that the data tech and mobile app company has studied distracted drivers, and it reports that distracted driving continues to worsen year after year.

It’s one step forward and likely one step back in terms of preventing catastrophic truck crashes in this country.

On December 17, the electronic logging device mandate goes into full effect.  On that day, all appropriate commercial truckers must record their hours of service – time spent on the road – in computerized devices.

How does this help prevent fatal commercial truck accidents?  Electronic logging devices should do a better job keeping dangerously tired truck drivers off the road than the previous process.

Apparently there are a growing number of commercial truck drivers speeding, and many today barreling down the highway with bad brakes.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the number of speeding truckers is on a distinctly upward trend.  Speeding tickets (federal and state) given to commercial truck drivers in the United States jumped 7.8% in 2018 over 2017.  And 2017 saw a 1.1% increase in truck driver speeding violations over the year prior, with 2016 nearly a 10% hike compared to 2015.

Walkers, bike riders and those in crashes with commercial trucks all had something tragic in common in 2018: more of them died in traffic accidents than the year prior.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released its report on fatal motor vehicle accidents in 2018. While there was some good news – an overall drop in traffic fatalities of 2.4% over 2017 – it has to be put into some perspective.  The NHTSA reports that even with that drop 36,560 people died in car crashes and commercial truck accidents in 2018.

According to the NHTSA, bicyclist deaths increased ...

Trucking industry representatives may argue they place the safety of other drivers as a priority.  However, their own actions tell a different story.

In September, 30-plus trucking organizations and lobbyists combined to attack public safety measures.  The largest was the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, a lobbying group that includes independent truckers as well as those who work for companies.

Data from the federal government show that the number of people killed in Missouri car crashes declined just a bit.  The bad news is that despite this minor retrench, more than 900 Missourians died in motor vehicle accidents in one year.

In August the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a report on fatal traffic wrecks for 2017.  This is the most recent year for which the NHTSA has final data.  That year, U.S. traffic deaths fell some 2% compared to 2016.

After finding 12,000 commercial trucks with bad brakes and other serious maintenance issues earlier this summer, the same safety group handed out tickets to almost 1,500 speeding truck drivers just a few weeks later.

In June the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance conducted its annual roadside inspections of tractor-trailers throughout the United States and Canada.  The CVSA is a consortium of law enforcement agencies and other organizations focused on making commercial truck travel safer. In a three-day period in early June, the CVSA inspected 67,072 semis as part of its effort to ...

In just three days this past summer more than 12,000 commercial tractor-trailers were taken off the road because they needed serious repairs.

Each year the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance conducts a three-day event of commercial truck roadside inspections in the United States and Canada.  The CVSA is a not-for-profit consortium of safety and law enforcement officials.  The group’s goal is to make commercial truck transportation safer.

This year’s event, called International Roadcheck and held June 4-6, is one annual step toward reaching that goal.  It’s significant ...

According to the “Large Truck Crash Causation Study,” the federal government’s most exhaustive research into fatal tractor-trailer accidents, the leading cause of such crashes is driver error. But another major contributor is improperly maintained commercial trucks, which recently was proven a common condition on today’s roads.

Driver Error Causing Fatal Tractor-Trailer Accidents

That federal study attributed nearly nine out of 10 fatal commercial truck crashes to a driver mistake or negligent action.  These included:

·         Driver falling asleep

·         Driver inattentive

Nearly two out of every five drivers in the United States believe it’s perfectly fine to use a hand-held cell phone while driving.

That’s according to the 2018 “Traffic Safety Culture Index” released in June by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.  AAA Foundation annually surveys drivers across the country to establish a snapshot of driver thinking, beliefs and actions.

The good news is that most drivers support laws that restrict texting while driving.  The bad news is that a significant portion still believe it is okay for them to drive while using a cellphone.

One key finding ...

Despite evidence that shows fatal commercial truck accidents are increasing, federal officials appear to be bending to the trucking industry’s financial interests by diluting an important public safety measure.

The safety measure is a relatively new set of federal rules designed to stop one of the leading causes of deadly truck crashes – fatigued truck drivers.

In June the U.S. Department of Transportation released a preliminary estimate of motor vehicle fatalities for 2018. The report projected that deaths in big rig crashes will rise 3 percent in 2018 over 2017, which will ...

According to a new survey, there are today hundreds of thousands of commercial truck drivers who would fail a drug test or would refuse to take one for fear of failing.

The report, which warns that some 300,000 truckers may be under the influence of illegal drugs, comes from the Trucking Alliance, a group of trucking companies that is focused on improving safety and preventing fatal truck crashes.

Federal law mandates the drug testing of commercial truck drivers.  It only compels trucking companies to use urine testing.  Hair testing is commonly accepted as a more stringent test and a ...

The cost for commercial truck repairs is on the rise, which may be bad news for drivers who share the road with big rigs.

There are several causes for catastrophic truck crashes.  The most common, according to the federal government’s “Large Truck Causation Study,” is driver error.  Trucker mistakes that lead to fatal truck accidents include speeding, distracted driving, and fatigue caused by driving beyond the legal limits set by federal law.

Another common cause for commercial truck accidents is poorly maintained rigs.

Watch for motorcycles.

That’s the theme for a month-long campaign from the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety.  It’s the Show Me State’s complement to May’s National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, an effort to reduce the country’s fatal motorcycle crashes as the weather gets warmer and more bikers hit the road.

In 2017, the most recent national statistics, more than 5,000 motorcyclists died in traffic crashes. That’s an increase of about 13 percent since 2014.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

If you were driving while you read that, there’s a chance you may have caused a crash.

The facts are indisputable: distracted drivers are a menace, causing a growing number of fatal car crashes.  According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s most recent statistics, 3,166 people in this country were killed in distracted-driving accidents in 2017.

But that number could be low.  The National Safety Council says that fatal distracted driving crashes are likely underreported as few states capture data following traffic ...

Commercial truck drivers and their big rigs are supposed to undergo inspections on a regular basis.  Inspections cover a trucker’s medical records and training, as well as truck mechanical defects that can cause fatal truck crashes.  With over 4,700 people killed in commercial truck accidents in 2017, such crashes occur far too often.

The most serious inspection violations are called “out-of-service” violations. Truckers and rigs given out-of-service violations are grounded until the issues are fixed.

In March the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance announced changes to ...

As fatal motor vehicle crashes rise in this country, it’s not just drivers and passengers who are dying.  The number of U.S. pedestrians killed in traffic accidents are now at historic levels.

From 2008 to 2017, the number of pedestrian deaths in the country increased 35 percent, with nearly 6,000 walkers killed in 2017.  According to the federal government, more than 16 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents each day in that year.

This month the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration published its newest edition of “Traffic Safety Facts for 2017” (the ...

Already this year, 131 people in Missouri have died in motor vehicle crashes. In 2018, more than 900 people were killed in Missouri fatal traffic accidents. According to latest data from the federal government, Missouri’s roadway fatality rate per 100,000 people in 2017 was well above the national average. And has been since at least 2013.

What are the most common causes for fatal car crashes in Missouri?

One of the fastest growing causes is distracted driving.  Fatal driver distractions are found in many forms – talking with passengers, eating or drinking behind the wheel ...

Electronic logging devices that record truckers’ working hours were legally mandated in December 2017 in an effort to reduce fatal truck crashes.  While more commercial truckers are now adhering to federal hours of service rules, more apparently are engaging in other risky driving behaviors and so the number of catastrophic trucking accidents hasn’t fallen.

Fatigued truckers can cause serious crashes.  That’s why the maximum hours they can work during the week – as well as rest periods – are limited by federal law.  Until late 2017, commercial truck drivers recorded their ...

Speed kills.

Speeding accounted for 37 percent of the people killed in Missouri motor vehicle accidents in 2017, the most recent year for which data is available.  Only eight other states had more traffic deaths due to speeding drivers than Missouri that year.  Illinois, at 42 percent, was one of them.

The Governors Highway Safety Association, a consortium of state safety officials, recently published a report on the dangers of speeding drivers, “Speeding Away from Zero: Rethinking a Forgotten Traffic Safety Challenge.”  Nationwide, according to the GHSA report, 26 percent of ...

Research and investigative evidence have shown that driver error is the leading cause of fatal truck crashes.  The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the agency responsible for regulating the safety of the U.S. trucking industry, updated its safety tips to commercial truck drivers last fall on its website.  These tips only amplify the fact that careless big rig driver action can turn deadly.

More than nine out of every 10 people who died in 2017 U.S. transportation accidents were killed in highway fatal motor vehicle crashes.

In November, the National Transportation Safety Board issued a snapshot report on last year’s deaths in railroad, aviation, waterway and motor vehicle accidents.  In 2017, nearly 40,000 people died in accidents involving these modes of transportation.  Highway deaths accounted for 37,133 fatalities – 95 percent of all U.S. transportation deaths that year.

It stands to reason that people who are tired are dangerous drivers and more likely to cause crashes.  Now there’s proof.

A study released in October provides a cause and effect relationship between fatigued drivers and motor vehicle crashes.  The study, titled “Acute Sleep Deprivation and Culpable Motor Vehicle Crash Involvement” and published in the October 2018 issue of the journal Sleep, examines the ultimate consequences of sleep-deprived drivers.

Researchers reviewed 5,470 motor vehicle accidents and interviewed the drivers involved, asking them to recount their ...

There is one thing to not be grateful for this Thanksgiving.

According to numerous studies, Thanksgiving is the one holiday period each year in which most deadly car crashes usually occur.  That’s because around that time is when we typically see a jump in dangerous and negligent drivers.

We may see even more drivers than usual on the road this Thanksgiving holiday. AAA forecasts that this will be the busiest driving Thanksgiving period since 2005, with 48.5 million people traveling via automobile between November 21 and November 25.

Driver error has been documented as the leading cause of serious commercial truck accidents.  But mechanical problems, such as defective truck brakes, were recently shown to be another major issue.

The most comprehensive research done on fatal truck accidents was conducted by the federal government over 10 years ago.  The “Large Truck Crash Causation Study” reviewed data and reports of nearly 1,000 deadly truck crashes to identify potential causes.

The number of people killed in truck crashes jumped 16 percent in 2017 over the year prior.  A recent event may point to one cause for this increase.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently released its findings for motor vehicle crashes in the United States for 2017.  According to the NHTSA, 37,133 people died in fatal motor vehicle crashes last year, which is a small overall decrease compared to 2016 fatal car, motorcycle and truck crashes.

The American Transportation Research Institute is a nonprofit organization that conducts transportation-related research.  It has a tool called the Crash Predictor Model that projects the chances which truck drivers will be involved in crashes based on their driving behaviors.  Earlier this summer the ATRI updated this research and announced its new findings as to which truck drivers are most likely to ...

An aging truck driver population and a boom in online shopping may be setting the stage for a rise in fatal truck accidents now and in the years ahead.

Both of these factors have created a big need for truck drivers. According to the American Trucking Associations – the industry’s leading lobbying group – there is a now shortage of some 63,000 truck drivers.  That gap is projected to widen to 174,000 truckers in eight years.

The median age of truck drivers today is 49. More truckers are retiring or finding other work than there are new drivers replacing them. The need for additional truck ...
